The challenges facing Florida manatees have deeply touched me, inspiring the creation of a unique piece dedicated to their conservation. All proceeds from this endeavor will go toward efforts to protect these gentle giants.
Understanding the Crisis
Florida manatees are primarily suffering from starvation due to the destruction of their main food source—seagrass beds. This destruction is largely caused by pollution and habitat loss. As if that weren’t enough, manatees also face several additional threats that further endanger their existence:
Seagrass Depletion
The depletion of seagrass is a critical issue for the manatee population. Pollution from wastewater and runoff has drastically reduced seagrass in areas like the Indian River Lagoon. This reduction leads to widespread starvation, further threatening the survival of these majestic animals.
My poster design is vibrant and colorful, depicting a manatee gracefully swimming behind the seagrass. I envision the restoration and resurgence of this magnificent creature. Having family in Florida, I’ve been fortunate to visit many times. I've witnessed manatees in the wild and am continually amazed by their gentle and graceful nature. Once, I had the incredible opportunity to see them in a river where the water was clear enough to observe the mothers and thier newborns together.
